HOT REGIONS

Alvaro Marcos Garcia, award-winning sommelier of private club Home House, is so convinced that premium Chilean and Argentinian wines have a big future in the UK on-trade that he’s just swapped his role as a wine buyer and sommelier to take up the position of business development manager for prestige accounts at Chilean producer Concha y Toro.“Given the style, the make-up, the character of these [South American] wines, we should definitely be seeing more of them in restaurants around the country, and that’s what I am going to try to make happen,” he says. A high-profile move such as Marcos Garcia’s lends weight to the on-trade initiatives that Chile’s generic body, Wines of Chile, has been conducting for the past few years, especially with the ongoing promotion of the grape variety carmenere as a food match for Britain’s most popular dish – curry.
